Whitgift Registers

My special thanks to Mr Freeman of Doncaster for the following entry found in the Baptismal Register at Whitgift.

"Baptisms Mrch 29th 1674. Here begineth baptised infants to be registered as follows but before I begin I think it not amiss to aquaint those that come after me as well as those that are now alive that the main reason why this register hath bene soe badly kept for some years last past was first, one Mr Babthorpe being Minister of Whitgift Parish went inhandsomly away and carryed the register with him to York and there not only left it in pawn for forty shillings but cut sym 3 or 4 leaves out all next to the year1631"

It does not say when the register was redeemd but the entry goes on to say that as some of the neighbours had recorded births of their children in their own books he would try and enter them in any other pages where there was spare space.

Before Lord Chief Justice Erle 28th June 1865.Nothard V Pepper. From a report in The Times.

"The Plaintiff and the Defendant are both shipowners and the plaintif sued the defendant to recover compensation for damage caused to a vessel belonging to him in consequence of a vessel of the defendant's having run into her on the high seas. The only question litigated was whether the defendant's vessel was at fault. The amount of the damage it was agreed should be settled out of court. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff."

Hull Packet

"Seven Lives Lost....Intelligence has been received in this town this morning of an accident which has occurred at Pillau of a most shocking nature, and by which several families in this town have been thrown into a state of great distress. Letters from Pillau of the 24th of January state that Mr Tucker, master of the Whim, Mr Roberth (sic) Nothard, master of the Garnet, with 2 foreign gentlemen and three of the crew of the Whim were out shooting in the boat belonging to the Whim. From some cause unexplained by any letters we have seen, the boat was upset in the surf, and all in her were precipitated into the water. We are sorry to have to add that not one escaped. This event has thrown considerable gloom over the town, and is of course felt most keenly by all those connected with the deceased. The vessells, we believe, were entering at Pillau" Hull Packet.

nb I do not know the year but would seem to be between Jan 1862 - Jan 1871

Military Cross - London Gazette 6th April 1918

T./2nd Lt. (A/Capt.) Wilfred Wasley Nothard M.C., Rif. Brig.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was reinforcing the front line with his company when the enemy opened a heavy barrage, which caused several casualties. In spite of the heavy fire and the fact that he was suffering from severe burns, the result of a mustard gas bombardment the previous day, he personally attended to the wounded of another battalion as well as those of his own company, and rallying the remainder of his men, guided them to their destination. By his coolness and utter disregard of danger he set a splendid example to all ranks.
