St David's Church Airmyn

Page updated 11th November 2004

The first church at Airmyn was dedicated in 1318 but in 1674 was described as being "quite out of repaire". Presumably a decision was taken to demolish it completely and to build a new one, presumably on the same site. The nave was erected in 1676 and was a field chapel. The land betwen it and the village street was common land but was given to the Parish as a burial ground in 1848 by the Earl of Beverley. The chancel extension was added in 1884. At the same time the old box pews were replaced by those in use today. One of the bells, restored in 1981, is only one of three surviving in England made by Thomas Dekon of York between 1370 and 1395.(Based on text supplied by Mr David Galloway)
